2020 Senior Thesis Project and Fashion Collection for 2020 MICA Experimental Fashion Show
Stories of the Black and Latinx diaspora translated into a collection of fashion and photography.

As an Afro-Latina looking to understand my own identity, I sought a reflection of myself but could not find others that looked like me in fashion and other visual media. They turned out to be windows but not mirrors of authentic representation. MIRROR challenges the viewer not to seek their self-construction in the reflection of others but in the reflections of themselves. Despite race and ethnicity, everyone should feel limitless when visualizing their identity.

Six models of the Black and Latinx diaspora were interviewed and asked how they would want to see themselves reflected. Their stories inspired editorial photoshoots with the models, then those photos were printed on fabrics and designed into a fashion collection.

The fashion collection debuted in May within the digitally redesigned 2020 MICA Experimental Fashion Show.

The culmination of the project is recorded in MIRROR Magazine, a self-published collection of fashion, photography, and stories that are “a reflection of the Black and Latinx Diaspora”.
